
ENVIRONMENT AND SANITATION DEPARTMENT
The Municipal Public Health department is responsible for providing strategic and administrative leadership for the management of policies and programmes relating to Environmental Sanitation. As part of the Department’s responsibility, it provides advice for the formulation and review of policies and programmes on Environmental Sanitation, Develop technical standards and specification for Environmental Sanitation service delivery.
The Department manages the day-to-day administration and controls all activities for the smooth functioning of the division. In order to ensure effective and efficient management of sanitation within the Municipality, the Department coordinates the application of engineering techniques and concepts in the solution of Waste Management problems.
Municipal Public Health also liaises with agencies in addressing complex Environmental Sanitation problems requiring inter-sectoral collaboration as well as lead the quality assurance process for Environmental Sanitation.
In the execution of its mandate, the Department initiates and coordinate research and lead the dissemination of results in the Environmental Sanitation field. It also vets building plans and specifications of various types of licensed establishments, for compliance with Environmental Sanitation rules and regulations.

The Department is also responsible for Waste Management and the provision of facilities, infrastructure Services and programmes for effective and efficient waste management for the improvement in environmental sanitation, the protection of the environment and the promotion of public health.
The department primarily receives and provides adequate treatment and effective disposal of solid waste.
As part of ensuring proper hygiene, the department supervises the cleansing of drains, streets, markets, car parks and weeding of road sides and open spaces as well as inspection and maintenance of sanitary facilities in the Municipality.

Food Handlers’ Certificate
Food handlers or food vendors medical is done at institutions allied with the Municipality. These institutions have laboratories with qualified laboratory technicians assigned to them
Note: This process takes two (2) weeks to complete and only medically fit clients will be issued with the food handler’s card.

Destruction of Unwholesome Items
Application letter addressed to the Director (Municipal Environmental Health Department) specifying the item to be destroyed and quantity.
Suitability Health Certificates
Client should go to the Municipal Environmental Health Department at Juaben.
Environmental Monitoring Control
- Noise nuisance
- Smoke nuisance
- Dust nuisance
Complaint of noise nuisance should be made at the Municipal Environmental Health Department.
A letter indicating the area, the address and signature of the affected persons should be added as a
supporting document.
Grave Space Acquisition
All burials in the Juaben Municipality must first pass through this department, after obtaining burial permit from Births and Deaths Department. Whether at a public, private or a family cemetery.
To obtain a grave space you will need the medical cause of death from an approved health institution.
Cremation Of Corpse
One would need;
- Application letter addressed to the Director
- Cause of death
- Embalment Certificate (specifying the chemical used)
- Proof of membership of cremation society (if a Ghanaian)
- Photocopy of passport (if a foreign national)
- Payment is made through the approved payment systems in accordance with the gazetted fee.
Note: this is done in a day
Exportation of Human Ash, Human Body (Whole Or Parts)
One would need;
- Application letter addressed to the Director (Municipal Environmental Health Department)
- Cause of death (communicable diseases will not be exported)
- Embalment Certificate (specifying the chemical used)
- Proof of membership of cremation society (if a Ghanaian)
- Photocopy of passport
- Payment is made through the approved payment systems in accordance with the gazetted fee.

Exhumation
One would need;
- Application letter addressed to the Director (Municipal Environmental Health Department)
- Court order (From a Higher Court)
- Copy of burial permit
- Death certificate
- Cause of death
- Identification of the disease person
- Identification of grave or burial place
- Payment is made through the approved payment systems in accordance with the gazetted fee.
Pauper Burial / Unclaimed Bodies
One would need;
- Police (Coroner’s certificate from court)
- Letter from Police or verbal complain to the Director
Note: All pauper cases should be reported to the police.
